How many chapters this week? It works it out.

Pacing guides are sold blank, and the advice printed on them is to divide the book by the weeks yourself. Give this your term dates, your breaks, and how long each book is, and every week gets its own numbers. No account, and nothing leaves this tab.

Step 1

The year

School days

Subjects

How many of each there are in the whole book or course. The unit is printed as you write it, so use chapters, lessons, or pages as you like. Give a finish date only if a book has to be done before the year ends, such as a one-term course.

Breaks

Whole weeks inside a break are skipped, and part weeks simply have fewer days.

How it works

The weeks are counted, then the books are divided across them

  1. Your breaks are taken out, so what is left is the weeks you actually teach.
  2. Each book is split across those weeks so the totals come out exact, with the busier weeks spread through the year rather than piled at the front.
  3. You get a summary to check the year fits, a grid of the whole year, and a weekly sheet with the ranges written out.

FAQ

Before you use it

What happens to the remainder?

A hundred lessons over thirty-six weeks is not a whole number. The extra lessons are spread through the year rather than added to the first weeks, and the total still comes out at exactly a hundred. Rounding each week and hoping is what leaves a book three chapters short in June.

What if a book has to finish before the year does?

Give that subject a finish date. It is then spread only across the weeks up to it, and the weeks after are left empty for that subject rather than being given a share of a book that is already over.

What are catch-up weeks?

Weeks at the end that nothing is scheduled into. Illness and slow weeks happen, and a plan with no slack is a plan you abandon in February.

What about a week with a day off in it?

It still counts as a teaching week with fewer days, and the summary tells you how many of those there are, because the same load in fewer days is what makes a week feel impossible.
